While attending veterinary school at Tufts University, the original songs continued to flow, some inspired by her unique emotional experiences working with homeless and injured animals. Natasha’s love of music is matched only by her love for animals, which led her to a career in veterinary medicine. The songs that ensued were a unique blend of samba, bossa nova, jazz, folk, and world music styles that told stories through eloquent lyrics. Her original song, “Fennecus,” which was written for a final class project while studying jazz theory under Tom Ranier at UCLA, would define a new direction in her songwriting. An avid writer of poetry and fiction, she kept vivid journals of her world travels, and after a life-changing trip to South America at age 19, she picked up the guitar and began playing and singing Brazilian music. Natasha studied classical piano for fifteen years and found herself drawn to lush impressionist harmonies and ragtime, which culminated in a fascination with jazz and composition. Coming from a musically inclined Brazilian family on her mom’s side, Natasha grew up with the sounds of samba, bossa nova, and MPB pulsing through the household, along with those of 70s singer-songwriters, Broadway musicals, and old school R&B.
