I don’t think viral videos really change how we view the world. The way news is transported will continue to change throughout the years. Mobile phones are also being replaced for gathering footage instead of using the traditional camcorders used in newsrooms. Smartphones are now the fastest and easiest option for journalists to gather information quickly, post it on socials, or even go on-air. They may reach out to the person that posted a breaking news story to have permission to use their footage. Photos and videos are also news stories journalists find. It has become easier access to gather interviews since a simple direct message or their contact information can be found. We often see this when news posts an eye-catching photo and we then read the caption that says, “link in bio.” Another way news and other television networks stay connected with their audience are by creating polls, Q&As, or asking a question on social media prior to the airing of the topic they will cover, to the audience can see their responses on air. Social media has become their go-to for reporting news that may be developing or simply any news they cover. Audience engagement has become easier and necessary for networks to gain a bigger audience for news distribution. News networks have gathered their stories based on what is trending and what journalists think will be relevant as a news story. Older generations might still use social media, but they depend more on the traditional ways news was presented such as on print, radio, or television. With Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook growing, the news is easily and fast distributed to people. With new generations around, news networks have seen the impact social media has had on news distribution. Since we now have our cellphones, it has become a crucial part of how companies gather news. It begins to discuss how news companies gathered traditional news and how it has changed throughout the years. The main points of Chapter 1 “Forces at the Gate: An Active Audience” is the importance of social media, audience engagement, where and what content is being aired, and the places it is being distributed.
